We are seeking an experienced educator and leader who is enthusiastic about working with youth, mentoring seasonal staff, developing nature-based education programs, and fostering an inclusive community.

This Environmental Educator/Camp Manager is a part/time temporary position with an opportunity for growth. The position runs from mid-April through mid-August, and is located at Viles Arboretum in Augusta, Maine.

In April, May and June, the Environmental Educator/Camp Manager coordinates and supports youth and family programs, school field trips, and a three-day April Vacation camp.

In July and August, the Environmental Educator/Camp Manager oversees a series of four week-long day environmental day camps for children.

In addition, the Environmental Educator/Camp Manager will participate in the on-going development of education programs focusing on the impact of climate change in the Kennebec Valley. The grant-funded project will be guided by the Viles Arboretum Executive Director in partnership with several secondary school educators, librarians, and area partners.

The ideal candidate is experienced in working with young people, is creative, passionate about the environment, and works well in a collaborative, fun and supportive environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Expanding existing programs and developing new education programs that support children and families in our community to engage in the mission of Viles Arboretum.
  • Working closely with the Land Manager and Director of Community Engagement to plan and implement camps and school programs.
  • Supporting and partnering on the planning and implementation of camp programs.
  • Managing student counselors and volunteers who are involved with environmental camp programs.
  • Supporting the two Maine Conservation Corps leaders in their planning and execution of volunteer activities.
  • Maintaining positive relationships with campers, students, parents and fellow staff.
  • Modeling safe and responsible behavior during outdoor activities in alignment with Viles Arboretum policies.
  • Maintaining and respecting all educational program equipment, the Viles Arboretum ecosystem, and the physical infrastructure of the property.
  • Collaborating with existing and new Viles Arboretum partners.

Desired Qualifications include:

  • A background in education, nature programs, biology, or environmental studies.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to follow-through on plans.
  • The ability to work well, plan, and conduct research independently and/or as a member of a team.
  • A passion for environmental education, outdoor learning, and program development.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications, online meeting/teaching platforms, and social media.
  • Have (or be willing to work towards) wilderness first aid and CPR certification.
  • The ability to lead with passion, energy and enthusiasm, and, when necessary, to follow with grace and support for other leaders.
  • The ability to structure programs and planning within time and budget constraints of the organization.
  • An ability to multitask, but also to recognize the need to shift gears and manage a variety of responsibilities with flexibility and poise.
  • An affinity with Viles Arboretum’s mission, vision and values.

This is a part-time position averaging 10-15 hours per week with flexible hours that occur M-F during the day. However, it must include a full-time commitment (40 hours per week) during the weeks of July 14th, 21st, 28th, and August 4th.

Salary: $22/hr.
