Viles Arboretum and Healthy Communities of the Capital Area unveil a New StoryWalk® Experience
Viles Arboretum and Healthy Communities of the Capitol Area are delighted to announce the launch of a new StoryWalk®, a collaborative project for young people here in Augusta. The StoryWalk® features 18 stations and will showcase a rotation of stories used with our local Maine SNAP-Ed program as well as a selection from beloved Maine Children's authors. Our very first story selection is “A Seed is Sleepy” written by Dianna Hutts Aston and illustrated by artist Sylvia Long.
Executive Director Ryan Martin expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "We are thrilled to introduce the StoryWalk® as part of our new Children's Forest initiative. This collaborative effort with Healthy Communities of the Capital Area and the Children's Museum of Central Maine is a testament to our shared commitment to nurturing the minds of our youth and fostering a connection with nature. The StoryWalk® will serve as a gateway to imagination, sparking joy, and curiosity in the hearts of children as they explore the Arboretum." The Arboretum anticipates bringing other interactive spaces to the Arboretum in the coming months.
Funding for this remarkable initiative has been made possible through the generous support of several organizations. Maine Snap-ED, Kennebec Savings Bank Catalyst Grant and Community Health Options have all contributed their support, and have played a significant role in ensuring the success of this StoryWalk®, underscoring their commitment to the community's well-being and the well-being of its children.
Viles Arboretum and HCCA invites families, educators, and nature enthusiasts alike to embark on this enchanting journey through the StoryWalk®. With each station presenting a new page of a book, children can immerse themselves in the magic of storytelling while enjoying the serene beauty of the Arboretum's surroundings. The Arboretum (located on 153 Hospital Street in Augusta) is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and does not charge a fee to enjoy the facility.
