Over the past year, we've been working on an exciting and meaningful project: creating a 1.27-mile fully accessible loop trail at Viles Arboretum. This trail will open new possibilities for visitors of all abilities, allowing everyone to experience the beauty and wonder of nature up close.
We've partnered with Town 4 Trail Services and accessibility consultant Enock Glidden to develop a plan that emphasizes sustainable trail design, minimal environmental impact, and natural aesthetics. The projects' goal
is to enhance trail access while preserving the environmental integrity and recreational value of the Arboretum's trail system. In addition to the loop trail, an addition to the loop trail, an accessible spur trail will extend across the wetland boardwalk.
Groundbreaking is planned for this coming year. The Project includes strategic trail realignments, surface enhancements, and grading adjustments to meet accessibility standards. Recommendations follow the Architectural Barriers Act Accessible Standards (ABAAS) and the United States Forest Service Trail Accessibility Guidelines (FSTAG), ensuring thoughtful, safe, and inclusive upgrades.
It's an ambitious $300,000 project, and with your support, we can bring it to life. While we've submitted grants - including to Maine's Trails Bond program - individual contributions and memberships are the foundation of what makes the Arboretum possible. Every gift helps us move closer to a more inclusive, welcoming space, where everyone can learn, grow, and connect with the natural world.
Please consider making a donation today. Together we can create a place where curiosity thrives, connections flourish, and the outdoors are accessible to everyone.
