We are excited to announce that we are expanding camp opportunities for 2022!
Viles Arboretum is creating a brand-new opportunity for area youth. Get ready to get your hands dirty as we explore the lush 224 acres of preserved land and 20 botanical collections at Viles Arboretum.
Built on prior years of summer camp's at Viles Arboretum, this new summer enrichment experience will give children the chance to become scientists for the week. Children will collect samples, use tools like microscopes, learn real-life survey techniques and more. Coupled with summer camp classics like group games, arts and crafts, and time to just explore the woods, this week is a celebration of the great outdoors.
In addition to in-depth exploration, children will also have the opportunity to tackle their own service project as environmental stewards, helping to take care of and celebrate the rich Arboretum resource.
Camp starts at 9:00 am and runs till 4:30 pm.
Before and after care services are available for an additional charge.
Our goal is to make this program affordable for all families. With this in mind, we offer a sliding-scale, income-based fee structure.
Each day, children will first gather for group games followed by a morning meeting to outline the plans for the day.
Mornings will consist of hands-on activities like organic gardening, composting techniques and plant dissection. Children will also have their own field journals for taking notes and practicing observation.
After lunch, children will dive into a nature study lab where they use real tools to study the pond, collect samples, catch frogs, dissect owl pellets, observe the forest, search for birds and more. The afternoon will also include time to get those creative juices flowing with creative projects like building shelters, creating plaster animal prints, up-cycling recycled materials, and mixing up DIY natural paints. Some afternoons we will have the opportunity to meet special guests. Last year we got to meet some sheep and tracking dogs - who knows what exciting opportunities this year will hold!
The day will conclude with dedicated time to work on individual or group service projects, working alongside Viles staff to tangibly support the protection and upkeep of the Arboretum’s precious environment.
Cooperative and fun - competitive camp classics like capture-the-flag, human knot, scavenger hunts and much more!
We'll work cooperatively to prepare healthy snacks in our community kitchen using ingredients from the garden!
Viles Arboretum is composed of 224 acres of diverse habitats and landscapes. We'll take on the role of a scientist and explore them all!
Our learning garden and orchards provide an interactive landscape for planting, harvesting, and stewardship.

It is normal for children to undergo an adjustment period when they start camp, the new faces and surroundings can be overwhelming for some. All of our staff undergo training to help them identify individuals that may be feeling overwhelmed or isolated, and make every effort to help each child feel comfortable and included. If by the second day you still have concerns with your child fitting in, you can arrange a meeting with the camp director.
Meals are not provided, we ask all parents to please pack one lunch and two snacks for each child. However, if you are in need of meal assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to us during the application period.
