The Maine Master Naturalist Program, a long-time partner of the arboretum, recently hosted a graduation event on our grounds. Here's a note from their organization:
"The Maine Master Naturalist Program (https://mainemasternaturalist.org/) offers a rigorous, yearlong course where students learn about Maine’s plants, animals, geology, ecological systems, conservation biology, and more. Guided by experienced volunteer naturalists and professionals, the course provides hands-on learning in the classroom and in the field. After graduation, Maine Master Naturalists are required to volunteer to share their knowledge with others.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, 19 well-trained and enthusiastic new Master Naturalists graduated from the 2020 program in early November. The Program is grateful to the Arboretum for offering a diverse habitat enabling us to conduct socially-distanced field work, as well as a place to hold our graduation ceremony safely outside on the Arboretum’s back lawn."
Serena Sanborn was one of the 19 recent graduates. Her charming final project is an in depth look at the plants and critters that can be found on the arboretum grounds in the form of colorful flashcards. Each card features an illustration by Serena and a description with scientific information and fun facts about each plant, animal, or insect. Serena collaborated with the arboretum's land steward, Lauren, while selecting what to feature in the deck of 23 cards. We are excited to have these decks printed and offered for sale at our gift shop in the near future!
