We are excited to offer our Young Stewards Summer Camp Program here at Viles Arboretum this summer!
This fantastic opportunity for children ages 7-11 will give children the opportunity to become scientists for the week. Children will collect samples, use tools like microscopes, learn real-life survey techniques and more. Coupled with summer camp classics like group games, arts and crafts, and time to just explore the woods, this week is a celebration of the great outdoors.
Each day, children will first gather for group games followed by a morning meeting to outline the plans for the day.
Mornings will consist of hands-on activities like organic gardening, composting techniques and plant dissection. Children will also have their own field journals for taking notes and practicing observation.
After lunch, children will dive into a nature study lab where they use real tools to study the pond, collect samples, catch frogs, dissect owl pellets, observe the forest, search for birds and more. The afternoon will also include time to get those creative juices flowing with creative projects like building shelters, creating plaster animal prints, upcycling recycled materials, and mixing up DIY natural paints.
The day will conclude with dedicated time to work on individual or group service projects, working alongside Viles staff to tangibly support the protection and upkeep of the Arboretum’s precious environment.
